Melting Mountain Pottery
Joey Sheehan
”Art is a form of spiritual healing in which my deepest feelings and emotions can be released and sometimes revealed. Although there are many means of creating and expressing oneself, I have found my passion in clay. A simple twist of fate in my educational environment evolved into a way of life. I love to make pots! Sitting and creating at the wheel has become a meditative and freeing process. The possibilities become endless and the need for more is unquenchable. I have found that clay has the ability to absorb energy from the potter, good or bad, and return it to the world in a thing of beauty.
My functional stoneware is a product of my personal experiences and the surroundings in which they have occurred. Nature is beautiful, inspiring, and unpredictable. I strive to give these same traits to my pots. My work is a reflection of the immense possibilities brought forth to our reckoning in nature and in life.”
Melting Mountain’s pots are wheel-thrown with a high fire white stoneware clay. The application of slip, or liquid clay, to create interior and exterior textures in a loose and fluid manner gives life to the form and a different character or personality to every piece. All of the pots are bisque fired and then put through a rigorous glazing process where a combination of pouring and spraying several layers of glaze creates the colors and patterns seen in a the finished pots. Many ash glazes are used in this process for their tendency to run and pool on the surface of the pot, reiterating the fluidity and motion created by the slip. Finally, the pots are reduction fired with gas or wood to cone 10, or about 2300° Fahrenheit, hardening the pieces enough for everyday use.
Note from the Artist Regarding Glaze Colors:
The images viewed online are original examples of my work. The form or shape of pottery ordered will be exact, but color and texture may differ. My process and materials allow a sort of "controlled chaos" to occur on the surface of my pots to make each and every one unique. It is this unpredictability of the ash glazes and slip that I use that produce the beauty of each piece.
